President’s New Year Message 2017

Dear Members, Friends and Families,

First of all, on behalf of MCD’s Committee, here’s wishing everyone a very Happy New Year and hope that 2017 will bring us all joy, peace, success, prosperity and good health!

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our MCD Patron, the Malaysian Consul General in Frankfurt, Dr Adina Kamarudin, who, since her arrival into Frankfurt in 2014, has delved herself into the Club activities, provided uncountable and valuable guidance and contributions, contacts and network, support that brought MCD to the forefront.  She has exceeded in her role as Patron and become a steadfast friend and part of the family.  We look forward to her continued support in the years to come.

The backbone of MCD is the Executive and Committee Members, which was formed in September 2015, and I thank the members’ confidence in electing us during the AGM.  Without this excellent Committee, all the Club’s events would not have been organized with such flaire and success.  My sincere thanks to them for all their contributions, support and hard work since then.  They have selflessly thrown themselves immediately into organizing all the countless successful events and activities in 2015 and 2016 – now readying themselves for more in 2017.  My heartfelt gratitude also to our “veteran”, incumbent and new members who came in full force, either rejoined or joined us in these events that made it all the more colourful and successful.  Our membership list has almost tripled during the last year and a half, how amazing is that! As I look back to the past years, my heart swelled with pride and appreciation for everyone.  As the Committee’s mantra goes…. ‘so proud, so proud, so proud!’

I would be remiss not to mention the very important and integral contributions and part of MCD, our beloved MCD Ambassador and Lifetime Honorary Member, Dato’ Chef Ismail Ahmad! Dato’ Chef has been our main contributor to our MCD Galas and Malaysian Food Promotions in Frankfurt since the last 10 years.  His name is synonymous to our main events of the year, to the Marriott Frankfurt, to our Members and Friends, that stretched even across Europe!  His ever charming, humble and bubbly personality, his outstanding culinary talents and most of all, his unlimited and overflowing love and friendship to everyone he meets has made him our “cannot do without” Brother in Frankfurt!!  Thank you Chef, from the bottom of our hearts! Looking forward to see you again this year.

2016 may have been good for some of us, but also quite a roller coaster for some, with changes in the workplace and family lives.  We have lost some friends and/or family members along the way.  We pray for their souls to rest in peace.  We have also made many new friends and new additions to families.  Let us be thankful for that and treasure them.

We look forward to a more joyous, peaceful, safe and successful 2017.  This year also marks an important milestone for MCD, which is our 20 years Anniversary!!  Obviously, we have already started groundwork planning for our “Event of the Year” to celebrate this momentous occasion.  Stay tuned for more details and for other upcoming events, the next one being our Chinese New Year celebration on 29th January 2017.

With that, I wish everyone Salam Sejahtera, Alles Gute and all the very best.

Sincerely,
Rosita Rahman-Heilek
President
Malaysian Club Deutschland e.V.

Eid-Mubarak Malaysian-style at Consul-General’s Residence

After a month-long fasting in the month of Ramadan, Muslims all over the world celebrate a thanksgiving in the month of Syawal. Eid-Mubarak means “Blessed Celebration”. It has been an annual tradition of the Malaysian Club Deutschland (MCD) to host the Malaysian-style Eid-Mubarak celebration with our Malaysian-German members and their families and guests. This year, both the consul-general of Malaysia in Frankfurt and MCD jointly hosted the event at the Consul-General’s official residence in Sachenhausen on 28th July.

Our lovely Consul-General Adina Kamarrudin and spouse Mahzan Samad in their traditional Malay attire.

The joint event kicked off in the afternoon with the official celebration with guests of our host Consul-General Adina Kamaruddin and her spouse Mahzan Abdul Samad. Her guests include fellow consul-generals from Pakistan Nadeem Ahmad, Turkmenistan’s Orazmukhamet Annabayez, deputy CEO of KT Bank Ahmet Kudsi Arslan, German tourism agency Wolfgang Meschonat. The guests were entertained with live demonstration of grilling chicken satay, our famous Spiess (skewer), making roti canai and ABC (ais batu campur), a mixture of syrup and sweet condiments on shaved ice. The guests were extremely delighted with our Malaysian way of celebrating one of the important festivals in the Islamic calender. The event is also a showcase of the diversity and inclusiveness of our Malaysian culture wherever we are – in and outside of our home country, according to Adina, who is also MCD’s patron.

ABC is always a crowd-puller and no one does it better than Michelle Chan as server

The informal celebration begins in the evening for MCD members and their family members, Malaysian students as well as consular staff. This year, the event is “by-invitation only” to club members as part of the Club’s appreciation to our members for their continuing support. The resounding success of past club events such as MCD Ball in 2015 and the recent Parade der Kulturen in 2016 owed greatly to selfless contribution of time and efforts of many members within and without of Frankfurt. Such was the spirit of camaraderie (muhibbah) and gotong-royong that has made the club a successful and still around for the past 19 years. In fact, many of these members were behind the scene in preparing the food for our official guests and members in the past 3 days, under the leadership of club patron Adina Kamaruddin and president Rosita Heilek.

Like the saying goes, “the way to a (man’s) person’s heart is through his stomach”; and we Malaysians sure know how to hit the right chord. Our traditional delicacies such as satay ayam, nasi empit, beef rendang, roti canai,, mee goreng and various types of Raya kueh definitely made it to the stomach and heart of consul-general’s official guests and our members. No one would deny the signature dish of our consular-general – lamb curry – was the best and none left till the end.

Some of Malaysia’s heart-warmers. No one would deny themselves a second or third helping.

Such events not only bring our members closer together but also members whom we have not seen for many years returning. In fact, we recruited a handful of new members and brought back old ones. We hope that through such events and more publicity given, we can bring all Malaysian diaspora together.

“MCD Family Reunion” at CNY-2016 Do

Chinese New Year is about family reunion, rekindling good old time and renewing old friendship and making new ones. This year, after so many years, we are proud to see our “long-lost” family members back into the fold. Welcome back our “veterans” – Eddie Goh, Maureen Lucas, Monica Koo, Peggy Eng, Irene Khoo, Regina Lill and many more.

IMG-20160220-WA0023

43 members, 11 guests and 7 children warmed up the ocassion at Yan Jing Restaurant Kaiserstrassse Frankfurt. Our MCD Patron Adina Kamaruddin and spouse Mahzan Samad joined us in this celebration. Members and guests were treated with wide-spread of buffet and endless steamboat and grill. I must say this really warmed up the ocassion as we embraced snow in the middle of February. Jimmy and Amy emceed events and entertained the guests with their antics.

The guests were also entertained with traditional dance performances from the local chinese school Huan Yin in Frankfurt.

No chinese new year is ever complete without “yee sang” – a must-have for luck and prosperity. Iris Schneider and her talent team of chefs – Irene and Alison – have prepared the “yee sang”. Our guests commented on the authenticity of this dish, which reminded us of home.

Happy Diwali / Deepawali to All Hindu Members

Happy-Diwali-Images2

Wishing all our Hindu members and friends
HAPPY DEEPAVALI / DIWALI

Diwali is called the “Festival of Lights” and is celebrated to honor Rama-chandra, the seventh avatar (incarnation of the god Vishnu). It is believed that on this day Rama returned to his people after 14 years of exile during which he fought and won a battle against the demons and the demon king, Ravana. People lit their houses to celebrate his victory over evil (light over darkness).

The goddess of happiness and good fortune, Lakshmi, also figures into the celebration. It is believed that she roams the earth on this day and enters the house that is pure, clean, and bright. Diwali celebrations may vary in different communities but its significance and spiritual meaning is generally “the awareness of the inner light”.

Lamps, fireworks and bonfires illuminate this holiday, as the word “Deepawali” means “a row or cluster of lights” or “rows of diyas (clay lamps)”. The festival symbolizes the victory of righteousness and the lifting of spiritual darkness. The goddess Lakshmi, who symbolizes wealth, happiness and prosperity, is also worshipped during Diwali.
